Super Thursday Picture Books

The first Thursday of October is traditionally the day when publishers release their Christmas titles – one of the biggest sales and promotional opportunities of the year for booksellers – and has become known, a bit unimaginatively, as… Super Thursday. Well, a lack of imagination isn’t something any of our new titles have to worry about, and we’re thrilled with the books we have to offer this month – as well as two new fiction titles, we have a BOUNTY of picture and novelty books out today.

Corina Fletcher, paper engineer and designer, is the brain behind some of the best pop-up books around, and we are absolutely delighted to be publishing her ingenious new novelty package, Playbook Farm. Cleverly combining book and toy, Playbook Farm unfolds and transforms from a 6 spread book into a 3D farmscape play-mat, complete with stand-up farm animals and vehicles. It all folds back neatly into a robust and toddler-proof box – and there’s even a handy little box to store the push-out play pieces. This is one of the best combinations of book and toy that we’ve seen and we couldn’t be happier with the finished product. Well done Corina and the brilliant illustrator Britta Teckentrup on an absolutely fantastic book AND toy.

Snow Bunny’s Christmas Wish is one of those books that makes you feel instantly Christmassy. And with evenings getting longer and colder, what could be cosier than snuggling up to read this lovely picture book. With sparkly foil throughout, it’s the story of an adorable little bunny who goes in search of Father Christmas so that she can ask him for her one Christmas wish… a friend. On her way, she meets other woodland animals all in need of a little help – and she gladly lends a hand – and in doing so she makes her own Christmas wish come true. Rebecca Harry’s illustrations are as exquisite as ever, and with foil on every single page, this picture book is very special indeed.

In Pip and Posy: The Snowy Day, the fifth book in Axel Scheffler’s wonderful series about two toddler best friends, Pip and Posy are outside in the snow having all sorts of fun, until they decide to build a snowman, when things start to go a bit pear-shaped. Pip wants a snowrabbit, but Posy wants a snowmouse. An argument erupts and very soon both friends are cold and wet – and very sad. But all ends well and soon Pip and Posy are friends again (and warm and dry!). Axel’s funny, charming artwork – filled with detail that will have little ones returning to it over and over – is perfectly suited for Pip and Posy’s outdoor snowy antics.

Just Right for Christmas is the paperback edition of last year’s wonderful Just Right – now with an extra-special foiled cover for added brilliance. This is a heartwarming story all about the joy of giving (beautifully illustrated by Ros Beardshaw), with a rhythmical text and a perfect Christmas message. The Sunday Times called Just Right “A cheerful wintry tale with wide appeal in which a piece of red material makes Christmas presents for everyone from a princess to a mouse”, and The Sunday Telegraph wrote that, “It’s hard to find a Christmas book that’s about giving without coming across all preachy (you can’t fool kids: Christmas is about receiving) but Just Right by Birdie Black and Rosalind Beardshaw delivers a warm glow with its waste-not-want-not message.”

Congratulations to all of our picture book authors and illustrators on their fabulous books!
