The Nosy Crow running club

Andy Murray wasn’t the only one sweating it out in Wimbledon yesterday – four members of the Nosy Crow team ran the Jim Braben Memorial 10K. Mary, Kristina, Zoe and I met in Wimbledon at 8.15am – first shock to the system. Second shock – just how bright our team t-shirts were. Third shock – it’s boiling and it’s not even 9am. We could have backed out then, especially Mary who’d already done 10k the previous day, due to a hitch in her diary planning, but we nervously made our way to the start line.

On your marks . . get set. GO!

We set off at a good pace, following the pack. Not knowing where we were going, urged on by smiley marshals, in the knowledge that the water station was at the 5k mark, and the start of the second lap.

Whilst Wimbledon Common, is very picturesque, we soon found out it’s really vast. There are no hills, but it’s very uneven, and most of the course was without shade. The last section is a seemingly never ending straight, which really tests the doubter in your head going, “I can’t do this.” But as a well oiled team, we stuck at it, killed off negative thoughts with a “yes we can” and a “this race won’t break us” attitude.

An hour later, we crossed the finish line, as red in the face as our t-shirts, vowing to never run in July again!

Our efforts were rewarded with a medal, energy drink and delicious brunch, where we recounted the highs and lows of each gruelling km. All feeling pretty smug with our achievement.

Half Marathon next year?
