Deep in the Desert, Gorillas trade oil for bananas grown by hi-tech Robots. But then they fall out, big time, and decide to have a race to settle their differences. Which side will get slimed by the garlic burp-breath sand slugs? Which will fall for the banana sundae mirages? And when will they realise that the race has no finishing line?

Kate says: “I know lots of boys who hardly read standard-format books, but who like to make their own comics, and thought that these were a perfect combination of narrative and doodling that could help turn the most reluctant reader into a more enthusiastic one.”
Excerpt: “Gorillas and Robots jostle each other at the starting dune. “Get lost, Rusty!” cries Nobby Knuckles. “Eat bogeys, ape-face!” shouts Bitomatic. And they’re off! Nine hundred and ninety nine years and six months, 15 days, 3 hours, 36 minutes and 48 seconds later, the race is still going. “I want a yummy banana!” complains Nobby Knuckles. “You can’t . They’re our ammunition!” snaps Grappling Sam.”

This book made me laugh.

This new series (called Mega Mash Up) from Nosy Crow is an innovative and clever combination of novel and doodle book and I think is an absolutely brilliant idea for reluctant or struggling readers, especially that notoriously hard market – boys. Gorillas and robots are two topics that will appeal to boys and the juxtaposition is clever. Enjoy the story as the robots and gorillas race in the desert and finish the illustrations in this novel doodling book. Zany stories and quirky illustrations make this series great fun.
