Kate says: “Nikalas and Tim talked about this idea at their first meeting with us. When they came back with it worked up, we made them an offer in five minutes. We loved the mad combinations and the short, action-packed chapters; the illustrations made us laugh; and the opportunity for readers to interact with books by adding their own drawings was a great new angle. I know lots of boys who hardly read standard-format books, but who like to make their own comics, and thought that these were a perfect combination of narrative and doodling that could help turn the most reluctant reader into a more enthusiastic one.”
Nikalas and Tim say: “We came up with the idea for Mega Mash-Up in our local cafe in Peckham Rye park while mulling over our recent drawing book projects. We realized that we could fuse fiction and activity books. Several cups of tea later, we had written a rough outline for the first book. The Mega Mash-Up series is about exploring the impossible through drawing. We were excited about the prospect of crashing several popular things together in one book, creating a world without constraints, and allowing young artists’ creativity to soar. It’s fiction, Jim, but not as we know it! Oh, and we’re really happy to be working with Nosy Crow. They’re unbelievably quick and decisive. What’s more, they get really excited about children’s books and their enthusiasm and direct approach means they get the best out of us!”

Reviews
“This really is a cross-over series – part fiction, part activity book. As such, the books are a great way to encourage children to develop their imaginations in both drawing and writing. They’re ideal for boys especially … This ingenious book gives the reader the chance to put their own ideas into the story, with lots of opportunities to draw and write.”
“An interactive story where the reader is encouraged to add details, drawings, or sound effects inspired by the sheer wackiness of the stories … the combination is irresistible.”
“You can tell the authors have had a great time making this book because it is really funny. What I also love about it is that it is interactive so the readers can add their own drawings and finish chapters. They can colour it in if they like, and to me, that’s lovely because it’s not only fun but it also extends the life of the book.”
“The brilliant Mega Mash-up books take great subjects for boys and turn them into short, whacky stories that are incredibly easy and quick to read. The illustrations are bold and crazy and there’s plenty of space left on each page, together with some suggestions, so kids can add their own drawings. The books read as hilarious, zippy stories, ideal for engaging reluctant readers aged between six and nine.”
“I can’t believe there is a 6-9 year old boy out there who will not be enchanted by this book… If you are a parent of a boy in this age range you would be a fool not to get these for your son…”
“This is exactly the kind of books us parents need to be able to hand to our offspring in school holidays or on long car journey!”
“This new series… is an innovative and clever combination of novel and doodle book and I think is an absolutely brilliant idea for reluctant or struggling readers, especially that notoriously hard market – boys.”
