This is the second book in the Small Blue thing trilogy.

Still recovering from her earlier brush with death, Alex’s source of strength and comfort is Callum, still locked in a sad half-life after drowing in the river Fleet that flows into the Thames. And she needs all the strength and comfort she can get: someone is out to make her life a misery, and someone is out to get hold of the extraordinary bracelet that enables her to communicate with Callum.

Perfectly Reflected is followed by Scattering Like Light.

Excerpt: “Breaking glass exploded into my bedroom. The cold, early morning air rushed in as I leapt up and pushed my feet into my flip-flops, not sure for a moment if I had been dreaming. The crunch of glass under my soles proved I was awake. Switching on the light, I quickly scanned the room, but it didn’t look as if anything had been thrown in. I raced over to the window. The drawn curtains had held back a large part of the debris, but piles of lethal- looking shards of glass on the floor by the window meant that I didn’t want to get much closer without proper shoes on. Leaning over, I pulled back the curtain. The early dawn light showed that the road was completely empty.”

Sue Ransom says: “When I wrote Small Blue Thing, I knew that it didn’t have to be the end of Alex and Callum’s story and that’s why it concluded as it did. As soon as Ellie, my daughter, read it, she begged me to tell her what happened next, so I carried on writing. Giving the characters (particularly the nasty ones!) the chance to grow has been fascinating. It was a brilliant challenge to keep things interesting – to make sure that the reader is going to care what happens to them all. I also wanted to keep the situations as real as possible: I want my readers to believe that this could happen to them, and to feel that they might react in similar ways in the same strange circumstances. Alex lives in the real world, so all her actions and experiences have to reflect that, even though she has this wonderful but weird connection with Callum.

Luckily, when Ellie read the first draft, she loved it, and she’s now nagging me to finish the last book, Scattering Like Light.

Kate says: “It’s a risk to commit to publishing a new author who arrives with one complete book: there’s always a chance that this is their one terrific novel, and that they won’t be able to repeat what they did in the first book. But when I met Sue and talked to her about the second book in the trilogy that starts with Small Blue Thing, I was entirely convinced that she’d be able to take the characters and the story onwards in to a second book. And – triumphantly – she has!”

  • “this is a thrilling sequel…I sat down with the intention of leisurely reading this book over a few days but this did not happen. From the first paragraph I was completely hooked and I did not put the book down until I had finished the last page. …I would strongly recommend this book and its prequel. They are easy to read and fast paced with a really original idea.”

  • “The second book in the Small Blue thing trilogy continues the story of Alex… I love the fact the series is set in London – so much fiction of this type is set in the US. The city is vividly portrayed and the characters are strong and feisty, with a great relationship going between Alex and Callum.”

  • Small Blue Thing was a favourite of YA and children’s book bloggers: “I thought this book was brilliant and… unlike anything else in the paranormal YA genre at the moment. I loved the combination of a fascinating mystery, ghostly going-ons, a generous helping of intrigue and a strong romantic thread running throughout. The ending was most definitely jaw-dropping and has left me in a state of high anticipation for what’s going to come next.”
