Who’s the grubbiest pirate on the high seas? Why, it’s Captain Beastlie, me hearties! He is a horror and embarrassment to his ship-shape crew. Captain Beastlie is eagerly counting down the days till his birthday – but what he doesn’t know is his crew has got a special secret lined up for the Big Event. His days of being the smelliest, dirtiest pirate ever are numbered, and when Captain Beastlie’s birthday finally comes, he’s in for a big surprise, as his crew plans to steal his filthy old clothes, pop him in the bath and give him a brand new set of pirate togs at his birthday feast.
This innocently revolting picture book from highly regarded author, Lucy Coats and illustrator, Chris Mould will appeal particularly to boys fond of laughing at disgusting snot and bogey-related subjects. Think slugs and snails and puppy-dog tails with a dash of skull-and-crossbones. Parents will love it for the same reasons – plus it’s got a healthy dash of days of the week, counting, bathtime and humour!

Excerpt:
One grey and grimsome Monday, Captain Beastlie rolled out of his bunk. Three rotten cabbages and a bacon sandwich rolled out with him.
“Only five days left till my birthday!” he roared, picking a bogey out of his nose and licking it. “Mmmn! Slimey!”
Lucy says:
I’m cawing with delight to be in at the very beginning of this brand new publishing house’s career – one of the most exciting things that’s ever happened to me. I’m infected by the vibrant enthusiasm of Nosy Crow’s whole team – from intern to MD – love working with everyone at the Nest, and can’t wait for Captain Beastlie and his horrid habits to be released on an unsuspecting world.
Kate B says:
This rip-roaring story about a pongy pirate is a brilliant, laugh aloud romp of a book, which is a boy-targeted addition to our ever-growing picture book list. Hurrah! It also brings the highly regarded author, Lucy Coats to the list, and an artist, who is one of the best contemporary illustrators and draughtsmen of our time. Double hurrah! I’ve always admired Chris’s work from afar and now I find it hard to stop looking at it very, very closely and thinking how great it is to be working with him on such a funny and lighthearted story!
