Mr and Mrs Deer would love to have a baby, and one day their wish comes true: they find a little antlered bundle on their doorstep. The baby keeps roaring, so they ask for advice from family and friends, who sent them off to fetch what they think the baby needs. But it’s very peculiar, because each time Mr and Mrs Deer come back from their errands, someone has gone missing. It takes a wise Granny to burp the baby and spot the problem: the baby’s not a baby. It’s a little monster!

Kate says: “The Baby That Roared is very funny and a little bit scary. It’s about a pair of deer who take in what they think is a baby deer left on their doorstep, but – spoiler alert! – it turns out to be a little monster. I think that that pretty much every parent sometimes thinks that what they have is more of a little monster than a baby, and that most older siblings would agree. And the final twist is delicous.”

Simon says: “I distinctly remember The Baby That Roared being conceived in a van in Dumfries and Galloway. I was ambushed by a vision of a pair of gracefully ungainly deer with lovably gullible, innocent natures. The little monster followed naturally and immediately. (I was not actually driving the van.) I am properly excited to be working with Nosy Crow – they evidently know their publishing onions.”

Extract: Mr and Mrs Deer had no baby of their own to love and to cuddle and to read a story to, but oh! how they wished that they had. Then one day, Mrs Deer found a bundle on the doorstep. The bundle had a note attached – a note attached that said: I am a dear little baby. Please love me and cuddle me and read me lots and lots of stories. ‘That baby,’ said Mr Deer, ‘looks peculiar to me.’
