Nosy Crow partners with John Lewis Partnership to create an instant picture book of the John Lewis Christmas television advert, The Journey
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, London, 27 November, 2012 – Independent publisher Nosy Crow is pleased to announce that it will publish a rhyming picture book edition of John Lewis’s Christmas television advert, The Journey, to be sold exclusively by the John Lewis Partnership on 1 December 2012. Written within 48 hours of the release of the advert on 9 November 2012, an initial dummy edition of the picture book, entitled The Snowman’s Journey, was produced by a Nosy Crow “task force” by midnight on 11 November, and had been presented to John Lewis, bought, and sent to print in Italy in the space of a week. The book, which includes Nosy Crow’s innovative digital audio initiative, Stories Aloud, will be on sale in stores on this weekend.
The project was conceived by Nosy Crow’s Managing Director, Kate Wilson, who was inspired to write the rhyming text for the picture book after watching the advert for a second time on YouTube, where it has been seen by over 2 million people to date. The book was designed by Stephanie Amster and edited by Louise Bolongaro and Camilla Reid. Tom Bonnick put together the Stories Aloud digital audio component using a reading by 13 year-old Freya Wilson, who played Princess Elizabeth in the Oscar-winning film, The King’s Speech and music composed by BAFTA award-winning composer, Robin Beanland.
“This was a fantastic team effort involving the sort of hard work and flexibility that’s possible in a start-up independent publisher in its first years,” said Kate Wilson. “I was one of the millions of people who went to YouTube to watch the John Lewis 2012 advert, and that’s when I thought it could make a terrific picture book. It’s a very simple story of an adventurous and difficult journey, with love at its heart, that everyone can understand, whether they’re an adult or a child. The fact that the snowman’s gift to his snowgirl was perfectly chosen, but also quite modest – a hat, a scarf, some gloves – felt right for this Christmas when so many of us are thinking hard about our budgets.”
