Nosy Crow publishes innovative Mega Mash-ups

Books mix funny fiction with drawing to engage reluctant readers, particularly boys

Nosy Crow is a new, independent publisher, publishing children’s books and children’s apps for iPads, iPhones and similar devices.

4 February, 2011: Nosy Crow is delighted to announce that it has published the first two titles in an innovative series, Mega Mash-Up, for 6 – 9 year-olds. Romans v Dinosaurs on Mars and Robots v Gorillas in the Desert are novels and doodle-books created by Nikalas Catlow and Tim Wesson. Readers are encouraged to complete the pictures, make up new characters and add speech to speech-bubbles.

Romans v Dinosaurs on Mars is set in a zany world in which the Romans and the dinosaurs co-exist in Romasauria, a glass-domed city on Mars. Their low-level bickering is set to one side when Augustus Astronomus spots a huge asteroid heading for Mars. Unless they co-operate, (combining a Roman catapult with giant torpoodos made of dinosaur poo), their civilization will be destroyed.

Robots v Gorillas in the Desert is the story of the robots of Nanaville and the Gorillas of Jungoil, who happily trade bananas for oil until a disastrous meeting between their leaders means they must settle their differences with a race across the Desert of Doom. They must survive hazards like King Sting, the giant scorpion, and a serious sliming by the stinky Sand-Slugs before they find they’ve gone round in a circle… and decide that friendship is the better path.

The books will be promoted in Sainsbury’s and Waterstones and have been taken by Scholastic. Rights have been sold in several territories. The books are supported by a lively website, www.megamash-up.com.

Kate Wilson, MD of Nosy Crow, says:

“Nikalas and Tim came to us with a completely unique idea that merged children’s creativity with their own. These books are both novels for young children and “doodle books”, and the child is invited to illustrate or add to the story on every page.

These books offer perfect – and innovative – way to engage young and reluctant readers (and, given the subject-matter, particularly boy readers) with a different kind of reading experience.”
