Blue hippopotamus

Blue hippopotamus
Glazed hippopotamus, Egypt, 2000–1700 BC

This little hippo from Egypt is a piece of blue-glazed pottery. Its exact date is not known, but it could be more than 4,000 years old. Egyptians liked little animal figures made of glass or pottery. The goddess Taweret was often shown as a hippo with features of a crocodile and human characteristics. To ancient Egyptians hippos were a familiar sight along the Nile, and they were both feared and respected.
