Lotus flower drinking-cup, from Egypt, 21st Dynasty, around 1000 BCE

Designed to look like a lotus flower, this Egyptian goblet is over 3,000 years old! The powerful scent of lotus flowers was linked to the concept of eternal life. One view in Egyptian mythology holds that, since the beginning of time, the sun-god appears from a lotus each morning, only to disappear again as the flower closes at night.
