Elephant figure made of coconut, Bali, Indonesia, 1950–1972

Coconuts are not only good to eat, they have many other uses. The shell can be carved into useful bowls or cups, or something to look at and hold, like this little elephant.

Asian elephants live in India and Southeast Asia, but they need a lot of space to wander and look for food. Often they find less room to roam as humans clear forests for farming or timber. A few hundred still live on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia.
