Farmer/Cows

Farmer/Cows
Wooden model from Egypt, 12th Dynasty, around 2000 BCE

This wooden model is around 4,000 years old. It shows a peasant (farm worker) guiding two oxen that help him drive a wooden plough through the earth.

Wooden models depicting workers involved in food production were placed in the tombs of noblemen and high officials, to ensure a continuous supply of food for their afterlife. A model of a farmer would ensure that the tomb-owner would never lack grain from which to make bread and beer, two of the staples of the Egyptian diet.
