Cheap glass, made in factories, came in the 1800s. Until then, only the very rich drank out of glasses. Most other people had cups and beakers made from pottery, pewter, wood or anything that would hold liquid, such as a gourd or a coconut shell.

Did you know?

If sand is struck by lightning, its heat may make long, thin glass tubes.
