The first gold coins were made about 2,500 years ago. This Roman coin shows the head of the Roman emperor, Hadrian. Imperial coins were used by people across the Roman Empire, from Britain in the west to the Middle East and beyond. Most countries stopped using all-gold coins in the 1930s.
