Key-shaped pilgrim badge, Italy, about 400–1500 CE

This is not a real key but a badge, made of lead and worn in the Middle Ages by a Christian pilgrim visiting a holy shrine. The key is a symbol of Saint Peter, who is often shown holding the keys to heaven.
