Ladder

Ladder
Brass ladder, Ghana, 1700–2000

This little ladder was made in West Africa, but it’s not for climbing. It’s too small and was instead used to weigh gold, with a pair of balance scales. It’s made of brass, a metal that is quite easy to heat until it melts to liquid and can be poured into a mould, to make a ‘casting’.
