The snail in this book is taken from a drawing of some flowers, a butterfly, and a snail. This snail is a common European type known as a brown garden snail. They have soft, slimey bodies with feelers and stalks where their eyes are, and a hard spiral shell.
Most snails live from two to five years, although some have lived up to 15 in captivity.
