Leather hat with fur trim, Mongolia, 1990–1995

It’s cold and windy in Mongolia and the nomadic herding peoples of the steppes keep their heads warm by wearing hats like this.

A traditional Mongol hat is made from four pieces of leather, sewn to make a domed shape. This one is lined with brown quilted silk so it’s extra comfortable. Four flaps are turned up and tied on top with a ribbon. This hat has its own custom-built box, made of wood and leather with a cone-shaped lid.
