Silk handkerchief, Biba, Egypt, around 1900–1927

The silk handkerchief from Egypt is from the early 1900s. Silk has been prized through history for its softness and strength. In Egypt this colour is worn for mourning and the handkerchief might have been folded diagonally and then tied around the neck of a mourning woman.
