We’re looking for a creative, committed, talented and flexible Senior Commissioning Picture Book Editor to join the team as temporary maternity cover from 2nd August 2021 to early January 2022 (exact end date tbc).
At Nosy Crow, we are very proud of our editorial team and the quality of our books. We aim to make Nosy Crow an environment where editors truly thrive, where they can do their best work, where they are listened to, and where they feel part of the whole company and of our decision-making.
Purpose of the job:
Working closely with the Head of Picture Books and our excellent design team, you will work with authors and illustrators that Nosy Crow is already proud to publish, as well as commissioning and project-managing new titles. You’ll be passionate about children’s books, with a good understanding of both the UK and international picture book markets, and you’ll be committed to making high-quality, commercial titles that stand out from the crowd and have strong child-appeal.
Key responsibilities and tasks:
Editing: We hope you have considerable editorial flair as well as possessing a strong visual sense of how words and pictures combine on the page to tell a meaningful story.
Commissioning: This job involves finding new talent, both in terms of authors and artists, as well as working with experienced authors and artists. We want someone who can spot a text with potential at a hundred paces and then turn it into a GREAT text.
Relationship management: As this is a Senior Commissioning Editor position, we expect that you will have considerable experience of working with agents together with excellent author care skills.
Negotiating: At this level, you’ll be a sharp negotiator. You’ll know your way around a contract and feel confident offering and pitching for complex multi-book deals.
Supporting: As Senior Commissioning Editor, you’ll support the Head of Picture Books with general department matters, helping to co-ordinate scheduling, delegate tasks, deputising at meetings etc.
Proof-reading: We expect you to proof-read and copyedit to a high standard and to also check the work of your editorial colleagues as a crucial second pair of eyes.
Data management: Biblio skills are essential and you will be responsible for the editorial title management of your own titles.
The successful candidate will have the right to live and work in the UK and will be available to start in early August, possibly sooner. We envisage this as a full-time role but are willing to negotiate working hours and patterns with the right person for the job. Given the current pandemic, the role will initially be a home-working one, but, as soon as our offices reopen, it will be based in our London office near London Bridge.
To apply, please email your CV, salary expectations and an email of no more than 500 words detailing why you think you would be the right person for the job, to Louise Bolongaro ([email protected]). Please also refer to where you discovered this vacancy in your application. The closing date for applications is midnight on Wednesday 2nd June.
Nosy Crow is an equal opportunities employer. We believe that employing a diverse workforce is an important factor in success and make recruiting decisions based on applicants’ experience and skills. We welcome applications from all members of society irrespective of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, race, religion or belief.
