When a Dragon Comes to Stay

A warm and funny picture book about behaving yourself when visiting friends, created by the award-winning Caryl Hart and Rosalind Beardshaw.

When a dragon comes to stay, will she behave herself? Why, of course she will. Obviously she knows she must share her toys and skip happily upstairs at bathtime. Well . . . not quite. Like all toddlers, this little dragon finds good manners a tiny bit tricky. It’s lucky she has some friends to help her . . . she is a DRAGON after all!

This delightful rhyming story is full of recognisable pre-school behaviour, and part of a series that includes When a Dragon Comes to Stay and When a Dragon Meets a Baby.

Caryl Hart is the author of books and series including The Princess and the . . . and How to Grow a Dinosaur. She has won many awards including a Magnola Book Award, the Geoffrey Trease Prize for Children’s Writing, the Oldham Brilliant Books Award and the Stockport Brilliant Book Awards.

Rosalind Beardshaw is the illustrator of My Pet Star by Corrinne Averiss, which won the Sainsbury’s Book Award and also won the Sheffield Baby Book Award.

“This picture book is a great way of talking to younger children about good manners without explicitly chastising less-desirable behaviour, but instead focusing on positive behaviour.”

– Reading Zone, Librarian’s Book Choice

“Bright, colourful illustrations bring dragon and her friends to life, perfectly capturing the perils of life as a toddler and show just what good behaviour looks like.”

– The Book Activist (blog)

“Caryl cleverly alternates the undesirable with the desirable behaviours in a rhyming narrative that gently guides without preaching… Altogether a smashing book to share with little humans at home, or in an early years setting.”

– Red Reading Hub (blog)

“Gorgeous artwork by Rosalind Beardshaw shows us us trio of happy smiley friends, reinforcing the subtle message of the book. Cleverly done, it’s very effective.”

– Parents in Touch (blog)

“This is just the sweetest little book about manners and behaviour juxtaposing the typical behaviours that children can tend to display with gentle redirection to more positive behaviour.”

– Lily and the Fae (blog)

“Gorgeously sweet picture book with a message that’s perfect for your own preschool little dragon.”

– Wee Reads Online (blog)

When a Dragon Comes to Stay, also beautifully illustrated by Rosalind Beardshaw, written by Caryl Hart, takes the domestic bedtime setting but gives it a twist with a friendly dragon sleepover.”
